Singin'in the Rain
After all of the rain yesterday, I started to think about this film. As far as I am concerned it was the best musical film ever made. I also think that Donald O'Connor's performance was a bit overlooked, but fabulous in its own right. Make them laugh, Donald!

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts. His grandfather was a judge in the Salem witchcraft trials of l692. The Scarlet Letter was a success. Familiar themes included guilt and anxiety.

All The King's Men
Robert Penn Warren's All The King's Men is said to be a fictionalized account of the life of Lousiana Governor Huey Long. The main character of Willie Stark begins as a reform-minded candidate, but uses bribery and other underhanded tactics to get his legislation passed. By the end, he is thoroughly corrupted by the political process.
Robert Penn Warren won the Pulitzer Prize in 1947 for this novel and is the only person to have won a Pulitzer Prize for both fiction and poetry. He won the prize for poetry in 1958.
All The King's Men was made into a film on two different occasions. In 1949, the lead was played by Broderick Crawford and in 2006, Sean Penn reprised the role of Willie Stark.

Duel in the Sun
John Brant is a freelance sportswriter whose work about the 1982 Boston Marathon originally appeared in an issue of Runner's World magazine. Although a work of nonfiction, the Duel in the Sun reads more like a work of fiction, as it details two outstanding runners lives during and after the race.
